Petra Gonzalez, 92, of Merritt Island, passed away February 1, 2019, with her family by her side. Mom to us, but Nana to everyone, was born on June 29, 1926 in Cayey, Puerto Rico, moving to Brooklyn, New York as a child.
She married the late Theodore Gonzalez in 1948, and they lived together in Avenel, New Jersey before relocating to Merritt Island in 1971. Petra is survived by three children: Kathryn Joan, of Amarillo, Texas, Louis Anthony, of Miami, Florida, and Gail Marie, of Merritt Island, Florida. She is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded Petra in death in 1995.
Petra was a strong, determined, and successful role model who was an incredible cook. You would never go hungry in her presence; always saying “let me fix you something to eat”. Even as her health declined, she was at the stove making rice and beans and preparing her world famous salad. Petra was immensely proud of her family and her grand children and great-grand children were the light of her life. Petra had a caring and generous soul and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories.
There will be a private graveside service on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, followed by a memorial celebration at the Merritt Towers clubhouse at 1:30 p.m., located at 200 S. Sykes Creek Parkway in Merritt Island. The family insists that people make donations to their favorite charity in Petra’s name, in lieu of sending flowers.
